Ho Chi Minh City? or is it Saigon?

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), formerly known as Saigon, is a captivating blend of rich history, modern innovation, and pulsating energy and it’s one of my favourite places in Asia to visit. As Vietnam’s largest city, it’s divided into distinct districts, each offering unique experiences and cultural flavours.

Here’s a guide to making the most of your visit.

Top Sites to Visit in Ho Chi Minh City

  1. Ben Thanh Market (District 1)
This bustling market is a sensory overload of vibrant colours, tantalizing aromas, and bustling energy. From fresh produce and local delicacies to souvenirs and textiles, it’s the perfect place to experience HCMC’s lively street culture. This is a large market in the middle of the tourist area so expect the first price they offer to be sometimes even 10 times the going rate. Remember when bargaining to do it with a smile but also be willing to walk away.
  2. War Remnants Museum (District 3)
A sobering yet essential visit, the museum provides insight into the Vietnam War through photographs, artifacts, and exhibits. It’s an educational experience that leaves a lasting impression.
  3. Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral and Central Post Office (District 1)
These two iconic French colonial landmarks sit side by side and showcase the architectural elegance of HCMC’s past. The Cathedral is a serene spot amidst the chaos, while the Post Office remains a functional and beautiful reminder of bygone days.
  4. Cu Chi Tunnels (near District 12)
A short trip outside the city, the Cu Chi Tunnels are a network of underground passageways used during the Vietnam War. Visitors can crawl through the tunnels and gain a hands-on understanding of the challenges faced by soldiers.
  5. Bitexco Financial Tower and Sky Deck (District 1)
For a modern twist, head to this skyscraper’s Sky Deck for panoramic views of the city. It’s a stark contrast to the city’s historic sites and reflects HCMC’s rapid modernization.
  6. Landmark 81 (Binh Thanh District)
As Vietnam’s tallest skyscraper and a symbol of modernity, Landmark 81 is a must-see. This architectural marvel features a luxury shopping mall, observation deck, and even an ice-skating rink. Head to the top for stunning views of the city and the Saigon River.

Food and Drink Highlights

No trip to HCMC is complete without indulging in its culinary delights. Start with a warm bowl of phở (noodle soup), followed by bánh mì (Vietnamese baguette sandwiches). Pair your meals with a glass of cà phê sữa đá (iced coffee with condensed milk).

Travel Tips

  • Getting Around: Use Grab (a popular ride-hailing app) for affordable and convenient transport.
  • Money Matters: The local currency is the Vietnamese đồng (VND). Always carry cash for markets and street vendors.
  • Weather: The city is really hot and really humid year-round, so pack light, breathable clothing.

Ho Chi Minh City is a place where old and new coexist in perfect harmony. Whether you’re exploring its historic landmarks, tasting its world-class street food, or simply soaking up its lively atmosphere, this city promises an unforgettable adventure.

Would you add HCMC to your travel bucket list?
